Sweden Redirects UNRWA Funding Amid Israeli Pressure, Deepening Gaza's Humanitarian Crisis
Sweden cuts UNRWA funding; Israel's restrictions worsen Gaza's humanitarian crisis, sparking global concern.
In an urgent statement issued by Joyce Msuya, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, the United Nations has condemned the ongoing military operations by Israeli forces in North Gaza, calling for an immediate cessation of actions that have placed the entire population at risk of extreme harm and displacement. Msuya highlighted a series of humanitarian violations occurring within the besieged region, painting a dire picture of the escalating crisis.
“What Israeli forces are doing in besieged North Gaza cannot be allowed to continue,” Msuya stated. She pointed to targeted strikes on hospitals, the detention of health workers, and the disruption of critical humanitarian efforts as indicative of a broader disregard for humanitarian law. According to her statement, health facilities have not only been bombarded but access to medical personnel and resources has been severely restricted. “Hospitals have been hit and health workers detained. Shelters have been emptied and burned down,” she noted.
The chaos has severely impacted local response capabilities. With shelters destroyed and first responders unable to reach survivors, countless people have been left without refuge or immediate aid. Reports also confirm the separation of families, with men and boys reportedly taken away by truckloads, creating fears of mass arrests and further separations from loved ones. “Families have been separated,” Msuya explained, as forced evacuations continue to drive tens of thousands from their homes.
The humanitarian fallout has been compounded by the high casualty rate. Msuya stated that hundreds of Palestinian lives have already been lost, and with thousands displaced, the crisis remains critical. "The entire population of North Gaza is at risk of dying," she warned, highlighting the bleak prospects faced by civilians who find themselves trapped.
